Lido Jungle Animals

As you may or may not know, there is an abundance of child Zoo Animals out there which I hesitate to bring on board. Hence, I will concentrate on those animals that are of a more realistic ( the more recent ones anyway... ) nature. Ready? Let's go!
Back to the beginning.... I first started collecting/playing with plastic animals when I was a wee lad and I remember a series of small plastic animals that were rather shiny, to me, and slim in appearance. I later learned that they were from a company called Lido. Lido was formed in the late 1940's and produced a wide range of plastic toys. From Cowboys and Indians to Trucks and cars to our Jungle animals.

There were 10 jungle animals in the series: An elephant, giraffe, gorilla, lion ( keep an eye on this lion, he shows up everywhere... ), bear, hippo, bison, moose, camel and rhino. As far as any realism goes, it goes right out the window! In any case, I love these old animals and I really like the " smooth " texture/feel that they have. Look at that giraffe, smooth as silk! The bear has indigestion and is waving bye bye at the same time. I think the gorilla ate what the bear had for dinner as he's holding his tummy too!
Not sure which is my favorite in this series but I believe the elephant comes in first with the slightly elongated rhino and the hippo. You'll see in the years ahead that it is very hard for plastic animal manufactures to close that hippos mouth!
These were probably sold in bagged sets and blister cards and you can still find them on ebay for a relatively low price. These, as are the animals of the early 1950's, came in no standard scale. Each animal is approximately 1 to 2 1/2 inches long and came in a variety of colors. I believe that the silver ones came as premiums in cereal boxes.
WANTED: YOUR HELP. If you, dear reader could supply this blog with more accurate information, especially the early animal series, I would really appreciate it, as would our readers. Thank you! Til next time.... enjoy!

Welcome to The Plastic Animal Zoo Review!

Ladies and Gentlemen ( Loud fanfare... applause, music and the smell of hot dogs wafting through the air.... ) welcome to the Plastic Animal Zoo Review, where we will discuss the wild and wide world of Plastic Animal Collecting and have fun doing it!
Why the Zoo Review name? ( Good question ) First, it rhymes! Second, in the huge world of plastic animal collecting, this includes Farm/Barn Animals, Horses, Horses and more Horses, Prehistoric Animals ( If you want a look at Dinosaur Collecting stop on by http://www.dinosaur-toys-collectors-guide.com/index.html and http://www.dinotoyblog.com/dinosaur-toy-collectors-guide/ ) and what is known as Jungle or Zoo Animals. We will concentrate on the Jungle Animals with small side trips to others that strike my fancy. Once again life calls and I must stop for now... Til we meet again later.... Enjoy!
